Course: Appetizer

Ingredients

  • 2 cans refrigerated breadstick dough (11 ounce each)
  • 1 tablespoon butter for brushing; optionally mix in garlic powder or parmesan cheese for extra flavor

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking sheet
  • Cooling rack
  • Clean surface

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Unroll the two cans of refrigerated breadstick dough on a clean surface and separate the pre-cut portions into individual pieces.
  3. Gently stretch each piece into a 12-inch rope and tie a small knot at each end to mimic the joint ends of a bone.
  4. Arrange the shaped dough bones on an ungreased baking sheet, leaving a little space between each as they will expand while baking.
  5. Brush each dough bone with the butter to help achieve a golden, eerily realistic color.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, checking around the 9-minute mark to ensure they brown perfectly and don’t overcook.
  7. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and transfer the bones to a cooling rack where they will firm up slightly as they cool.
  8. Serve warm on their own or alongside a dipping sauce like marinara 'blood' dip or hummus 'slime' for an added spooky touch.

Notes

This recipe is perfect for a last-minute Halloween treat and works well as an appetizer or fun snack during your festive celebrations. The dough is simple to handle and the transformation into spooky bones is a great activity for kids. For extra flavor, consider mixing garlic powder or parmesan cheese into the butter. Serve the bones warm for the best texture and presentation.
