Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup softened margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts Optional – can be substituted with chocolate chips or omitted if desired

Equipment

  • Loaf pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Oven
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat together the softened margarine, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract on medium speed until the mixture becomes creamy.
  3. Mash the ripe bananas thoroughly and add them along with the milk to the mixture. Beat on low speed just until blended.
  4. Add the dry ingredients – flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt – to the bowl. Mix on low speed until just moistened to maintain a tender crumb.
  5. Gently fold in the chopped walnuts, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Let the bread rest in the pan for 15 minutes on a wire rack before removing it. Allow to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

This decadent chocolate banana bread is not only delicious but also highly adaptable. You can swap walnuts for chocolate chips or other nuts, substitute butter for margarine for a richer flavor, or even go dairy-free by using coconut oil and almond milk. The recipe is perfect for busy mornings or as a make-ahead treat, and it remains moist for days. Enjoy it as a standalone snack, with a coffee, or paired with a scoop of ice cream for dessert.
