Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk warmed
For the Beef & Toast
  • 1 jar (2.5 oz) halal beef rinse under cool water and slice into thin strips
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
  • Pinch cayenne pepper optional, for heat
  • 4-6 slices bread white, wheat, or sourdough for toasting

Equipment

  • Medium skillet
  • Whisk
  • Toaster or broiler
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. Rinse the jarred beef under cool water to remove excess salt. Pat the beef dry with paper towels and slice into thin strips.
  2. In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter until it’s just bubbling.
  3. Stir in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and whisk constantly for about 1 minute until the mixture is smooth and slightly bubbly, forming a roux.
  4. Gradually pour in 2 cups of warmed whole milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Continue whisking for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Add the sliced beef strips to the thickened sauce and simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the beef is heated through.
  6. Season the sauce with 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and a pinch of cayenne pepper, if desired. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  7. Toast 4-6 slices of your chosen bread until golden and crisp using a toaster or under a broiler.
  8. Spoon the creamy beef mixture generously over the toasted bread and serve immediately.

Notes

If you want to experiment with this dish, you can swap the halal beef for leftovers like turkey or ham, or even try smoked salmon for a twist. If you’re catering to dietary restrictions, almond milk and gluten‐free flour work as substitutes for whole milk and all-purpose flour. Consider adding vegetables such as mushrooms or caramelized onions for extra flavor, and serve with a light, acidic side like a citrus salad or pickled veggies to balance the richness of the sauce.
