Ingredients

Chocolate Peanut Butter Haystacks Ingredients
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate for a sweeter version
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cups crunchy chow mein noodles from a can; this ingredient gives the haystacks their signature crunch
  • 1/2 cup salted peanuts optional, for extra crunch
  • 1/4 cup butterscotch chips optional, for additional sweetness

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Spoon
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Place 1 cup of chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring between each burst until the chocolate is smooth and glossy.
  2. Stir in 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter into the melted chocolate until the mixture becomes velvety and uniform.
  3. Gently fold in 2 cups of crunchy chow mein noodles. If using, add the optional 1/2 cup of salted peanuts to incorporate an extra layer of crunch.
  4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto the sheet, shaping each one into a rustic mound that resembles a haystack.
  5. Refrigerate the haystacks for 30-45 minutes until the chocolate sets and the treats firm up.
  6. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

These haystacks are incredibly simple to customize. If you’re not a fan of semi-sweet chocolate, milk chocolate works well for a sweeter version. Experiment with mix-ins like shredded coconut, dried cranberries, or crushed Oreos to create your signature treat. They’re best enjoyed chilled, and while the recipe calls for chow mein noodles for that classic texture, feel free to try pretzel sticks or corn flakes if you’re looking for an alternative crunch.
