Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 6 slices turkey bacon chopped
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce ensure halal
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots
  • 2 green onions sliced (optional, for garnish)

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Casserole dish

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and heat a large skillet.
  2. Cook the 6 slices of chopped turkey bacon in the skillet over medium heat until they become nice and crisp. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate and leave about 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat in the pan.
  3. In the same skillet, add 1 pound of ground beef and 1 small diced onion. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, until the beef is browned and the onion softens.
  4. Stir in 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper. Then mix in 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, and 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce. Fold the cooked bacon back into the mixture.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the 10.5 oz can of condensed cheddar cheese soup and 1 cup sour cream until well combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish. Top with 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, arrange the frozen tater tots (from the 32 oz bag) in a single layer on top, and then sprinkle the remaining cup of cheese evenly over the tots.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden and crispy and the cheese is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Garnish with the sliced green onions just before serving.

Notes

This Bacon Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole is a creative twist on traditional comfort food, inspired by all the great flavors of a cheeseburger. You can easily swap turkey bacon with regular bacon or even plant-based alternatives for a different twist, and adding extra veggies like bell peppers or mushrooms works well too. The dish is practical for busy weeknights and tastes even better as leftovers. Serve with a fresh side salad or coleslaw to balance the rich flavors.
