Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 6 strips turkey bacon cooked and crumbled
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can (24 oz) pasta sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes drained
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 9 lasagna noodles cooked al dente
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 green onions sliced (for garnish)
  • to taste Salt and black pepper

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Sheet pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. In a large skillet, crisp 6 strips of turkey bacon until they are perfectly done.
  2. Remove the bacon from the pan, crumble it into bite-sized pieces, and set half aside for topping later.
  3. In the same skillet, add 1 pound of lean ground beef and 1 small finely chopped onion. Brown the beef until it is no longer pink.
  4. Add 3 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  5. Drain any excess fat, then stir in the 24-ounce can of pasta sauce, the 14.5-ounce can of drained diced tomatoes, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, and half of the crumbled bacon. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, mix 2 cups of ricotta cheese with 1 large egg to create a creamy layer.
  7. Assemble the lasagna in a sheet pan by layering the meat sauce, 9 cooked lasagna noodles, and the ricotta mixture. Sprinkle a blend of cheeses over each layer using 2 cups shredded mozzarella, 1 cup shredded cheddar, and ½ cup grated Parmesan. Repeat the layering, finishing with a final blanket of cheese and the reserved bacon crumbles on top.
  8. Bake the assembled lasagna for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden. Once removed from the oven, garnish with the 2 sliced green onions.
  9. Allow the dish to rest for about 10 minutes before cutting and serving to ensure the layers hold together nicely.

Notes

This recipe is wonderfully adaptable. You can swap lean ground beef for ground turkey or use regular bacon instead of turkey bacon for an extra rich flavor. Feel free to add finely chopped veggies like bell peppers or mushrooms to the sauce for a nutritional boost. Preparing the sauce ahead of time and refrigerating it can also save time on busy days, and serving with a fresh arugula salad or garlic bread makes for a complete, balanced meal.
